Fired in the name of...
Updated On: May 31, 2017

Norfolk Southern Corp just recorded a record profit for the first quarter 2017 and voted for a 34.6% pay increase for CEO Jim Squires. Yet in spite of increased revenue, record profits, and decreased operating ration, NS displaced 42 of the 71 carmen from Chattanooga. That equates to 60% less personnel inspecting hazardous chemicals and nuclear waste cars from sites such as Olin Chemical or the Y-12 in Oak Ridge. Think about that the next time a train rolls through your town. We don’t evacuate homes, we evacuate cities!

Here’s a little more of the mind set from Squires. Interviewed on CNBC’s “Mad Money” by quack-ish pundit Jim Cramer, Squires said: “There is always opportunity through business process improvements and through working our assets ever harder. We are very focused on productivity. That has been the source of a lot of our improvements this year.”

Squires added, Norfolk Southern has worked hard on cutting costs this year by focusing on both cost efficiency and productivity where ever possible.

It was refreshing to read in the Chattanooga Times Free Press when a NS spokesman said the railroad intends to offer jobs to affected employees in other parts of [our] system as individuals' seniority with the company allows.

The Chattanoogan reports that:

Town hall meetings have been set by Norfolk Southern Railroad to explain the reductions.

Operations and labor relations officers will be on hand to answer questions regarding benefits, transfer options and other issues.

WTF! We know how it works. These laid-off workers scramble to make bumps until eventually somebody can’t. Like a life changing game of musical chairs. When the music stops, those who don't have a job go home... to the same bills and obligations we all have. While Jim Squires sits on his boney ass and watches his bank account grow.
